What internet speed do you need for IPTV?
8 Mbps for SD, 15 for HD, 25+ for 4K — per stream. But a stable 20 Mbps beats an unstable 200 Mbps every time.
Short version: 8 Mbps for SD, 15 for HD, 20 for Full HD, 25+ for 4K — per stream. Add 5–10 Mbps of headroom for everything else in the house.
But the headline number is the least interesting part of this. Stability matters more, and almost nobody checks it.
Per-stream requirements

"Minimum" means it will play. "Comfortable" means it will play through the goal that everyone in the country is watching simultaneously, which is a meaningfully different standard.
Multiple streams add up
Bandwidth is shared. Two HD streams need roughly 30 Mbps, not 15.
A realistic four-person household on a Saturday afternoon:
- 4K on the main TV — 25 Mbps
- HD on a tablet — 15 Mbps
- Someone gaming — 5 Mbps
- Phones, laptops, smart home — 10 Mbps
Total: around 55 Mbps. A 30 Mbps line will visibly struggle even though it comfortably exceeds the single-stream 4K figure.
Why stability beats speed
This is the part that catches people out.
Streaming video needs data to arrive continuously. Your player holds a few seconds of buffer; if delivery pauses for longer than that, playback stops — regardless of how fast the line is when it's working.
A rock-solid 20 Mbps line delivers flawless HD. A 200 Mbps line that drops packets every ninety seconds buffers constantly. The speed test looks brilliant in both cases.
Three metrics matter more than download speed:
- Latency — under 50 ms is good, over 100 ms causes slow channel changes.
- Jitter — variation in latency. Under 30 ms is fine; above that causes micro-stutters.
- Packet loss — anything above 1% is a problem. This is the usual hidden culprit.

Wi-Fi is usually the real bottleneck
Your 200 Mbps package is delivered to the router. What reaches the Firestick behind the TV, through two walls, on a congested 2.4 GHz channel, is frequently under 20 Mbps.
How to tell: run a speed test on the streaming device itself, in its actual location. Not on your phone next to the router.
If that number is much lower than your package, the fix is ethernet — a £10 adapter resolves more buffering than any broadband upgrade.

If your broadband has a cap, IPTV will find it. Unlimited is effectively required for regular viewing.
What to do if you're under-provisioned
Can't upgrade the line? Drop the quality. 720p on a 43-inch TV at normal viewing distance is genuinely hard to distinguish from 1080p, and it halves the bandwidth.
Sharing with housemates? Enable QoS on the router and prioritise the streaming device.
Rural or unstable connection? Increase the buffer size in your player. A larger buffer trades a couple of seconds of start delay for much better resilience to interruptions.
When the speed isn't the problem
If your connection tests fine, Netflix plays perfectly, and only one IPTV service freezes — and only at peak time — the constraint is that provider's server capacity, not your bandwidth. No upgrade at home fixes an oversold server.
