What is IPTV?
Television delivered over the internet — how it works, what the jargon means, and whether it's worth switching to.
IPTV stands for Internet Protocol Television. It means television delivered over an internet connection instead of a satellite dish, terrestrial aerial or cable network.
That's the whole definition. Everything else is detail.
The word carries an unfair reputation, because it's often used to mean "grey-market channel lists". But by the technical definition, Netflix is IPTV. So is BBC iPlayer, Disney+, YouTube TV and Sky Glass. They're all television arriving over IP.
How IPTV actually works
Traditional broadcast sends one signal to everyone at once. Your dish or aerial receives it whether or not the TV is on. It's a one-way firehose.
IPTV is a conversation. Your player asks for content; a server sends it, to you specifically.
Here is the sequence:
- Encoding. The broadcaster's video feed is compressed, usually into several quality variants at once — 480p, 720p, 1080p, 4K.
- Segmenting. Each variant is chopped into small numbered chunks, typically two to ten seconds long.
- The manifest. A small text file (the
.m3u8playlist) lists the chunks in order and points at each quality variant. - Delivery. Chunks are distributed across a CDN so viewers pull from a nearby server rather than the origin.
- Playback. Your player reads the manifest, downloads chunks in sequence, buffers a few seconds ahead and plays them back seamlessly.
- Adaptation. Every few seconds the player checks how fast chunks are arriving and switches quality variant accordingly — this is adaptive bitrate streaming, and it's why picture quality shifts mid-programme when your connection dips.
For a live channel the manifest is rewritten continuously as new chunks are published, and the player re-reads it to stay current. That's the entire mechanism behind live IPTV.
Why streams buffer, explained by the mechanism
Your player holds a small buffer — a few seconds of chunks downloaded ahead of what you're watching.
If chunks stop arriving fast enough, the buffer empties and playback halts. That's buffering. Not a mystery; simply the queue running dry.
Which explains something people find counter-intuitive: a stable 20 Mbps connection outperforms an unstable 200 Mbps one. The fast line delivers chunks in bursts with gaps; the gaps empty the buffer. The slower line delivers them steadily and the buffer never runs out.
The three types of IPTV
Live IPTV — channels broadcasting in real time, exactly like traditional TV. News, sport, live entertainment. This is what most people mean by IPTV, and what the GuardianTV Live player does.

The honest summary: IPTV wins decisively on price, choice and flexibility. Satellite wins on one thing — it doesn't need your broadband, so a poor connection doesn't affect it.

Is IPTV legal?
The technology is entirely legal. What matters is whether a specific service holds rights to what it transmits.
Licensed services (Netflix, Sky, iPlayer) are clearly legal. Free-to-air streams that broadcasters publish openly are legal to watch in most countries. Services reselling encrypted premium channels without licensing them are not.
