How to Set Up IPTV on Android TV & Google TV (Easy Guide)

Full Play Store access makes this the easiest platform. Two minutes, no sideloading.

Easy3–5 minutes5 stepsUpdated

Step-by-step

  1. 1

    Open the Google Play Store

From the Android TV or Google TV home screen, open the Play Store app.

  2. 2

    Install an IPTV player

Search for 'IPTV Smarters Pro' (fully free) or 'TiviMate' (better guide, free tier limited to one playlist) and install it.

  3. 3

    Choose your login type

Open the app and select 'Xtream Codes API' if your provider gave you a server, username and password — or 'M3U playlist' if you have a single URL.

  4. 4

    Enter your details and load

Type the credentials carefully; they are case-sensitive and the server address needs its port number. Press Add or Login to load the channel list.

  5. 5

    Configure the EPG

On Xtream Codes the guide loads automatically. On M3U, add your provider's XMLTV URL under the app's EPG settings, then trigger a refresh.

Android TV is the least troublesome IPTV platform because the Play Store carries the apps directly — no sideloading, no developer options, no downloader codes.

This covers Sony, Philips, TCL and Hisense Android televisions, Nvidia Shield, Chromecast with Google TV and generic Android TV boxes.

Choosing between the two main apps

IPTV Smarters Pro is entirely free with no feature locks. Reliable, unexciting, handles both credential types.

TiviMate has the best guide grid on the platform — a genuine EPG matrix that feels like a premium set-top box. The free tier permits one playlist and blocks recording, catch-up and multi-view.

For most people with one provider: install TiviMate free and see whether the interface justifies eventually paying for it.

Performance tuning

Android TV hardware varies enormously, from a £25 no-brand box to an Nvidia Shield.

On weaker hardware:

  • Set the decoder to hardware for lower CPU load.
  • Reduce the buffer if channel changes feel sluggish; increase it if playback stutters.
  • Turn off channel-logo loading for very large playlists — fetching thousands of logos is genuinely slow.

On a Shield or a recent Sony, none of this is necessary.

Ethernet still wins

Even on Android TV, wired beats wireless. Most boxes have an ethernet port; most TVs do too. If the router is reachable, use it.

If channels won't load

Test the M3U URL in a computer browser first. If it returns text beginning #EXTM3U, the line is fine and the problem is the app — clear its cache and re-add the playlist. If it returns an error page, the subscription or URL is the issue.

Android TV & Google TV — FAQ

Is TiviMate worth paying for?

If you have more than one provider, or want recording, catch-up TV and multi-view, yes — the premium unlock is a one-off payment and the interface is the best available on Android TV. With a single provider and live TV only, the free tier is sufficient.

Can I use IPTV on a Chromecast with Google TV?

Yes. Chromecast with Google TV runs full Android TV with Play Store access, so IPTV Smarters and TiviMate install normally. It is one of the easiest IPTV devices available.
